Understanding

What water quality & safety means

What is water quality & safety?

Water quality & safety work ensures access to safe, clean drinking water through comprehensive water testing, quality monitoring and safety education — critical for preventing waterborne diseases, protecting public health, and keeping water sources within safety standards for human consumption.

Our programmes encompass the establishment and management of water testing laboratories, training community members in water quality assessment using Field Test Kits (FTKs), regular water quality monitoring, and water treatment and purification solutions. To date, 15 testing laboratories have conducted 10,000+ water tests across physical, chemical and microbiological parameters.

We work closely with government water departments and health authorities to ensure sustainable water safety practices and build local capacity for ongoing water quality management — 500+ community members and local technicians now carry out their own water quality monitoring and assessment.

Why this work matters

The challenge on the ground — and our answer

The challenge

Unsafe water spreads disease

Water that fails safety standards for human consumption exposes whole communities to waterborne diseases.

Our response

Test water in real laboratories

15 water quality testing laboratories have conducted 10,000+ tests for physical, chemical and microbiological parameters.

The challenge

Communities can't check their own water

Without local skills and equipment, villages have no way to assess the quality of the water they drink every day.

Our response

Put Field Test Kits in local hands

500+ community members and local technicians trained to run water quality testing with FTKs — monitoring stays in the village.

The challenge

Contamination goes unnoticed until people fall ill

Quality can slip anywhere along the chain — at the source, in storage tanks or in the distribution network.

Our response

Systematic surveillance, early detection

Regular monitoring of sources, storage systems and distribution networks across multiple districts catches contamination early.

The challenge

Knowing water is unsafe doesn't make it safe

A failed test protects nobody unless it is followed by treatment that actually fixes the water.

Our response

Treatment and prompt correction

Filtration, purification and disinfection systems plus prompt corrective measures — achieving a 95% safety compliance rate.

Impact

What water quality & safety changes

Laboratory testing

Established and manage 15 water quality testing laboratories conducting 10,000+ water tests annually for chemical, physical and microbiological parameters.

Community training

Trained 500+ community members and local technicians in water quality testing using Field Test Kits (FTKs), enabling local water quality monitoring and assessment.

Safe water access

Ensured access to safe drinking water for thousands of families through continuous monitoring and treatment solutions, achieving 95% safety compliance.

Disease prevention

Significantly reduced waterborne diseases in programme areas through early detection of water contamination and prompt implementation of corrective measures.
