A Coodu Trust drought-response initiative that took sustainable agriculture workshops, seminars and publications to farming communities in officially declared drought-prone districts of Tamil Nadu.
The project
Reintroducing sustainable agricultural concepts to combat water scarcity and farmland degradation by promoting natural soil fertility management and reducing chemical dependency during Tamil Nadu's severe drought period.
Implemented by Coodu Trust during 2002–2003 — a period marked by significant drought in Tamil Nadu — this drought response program targeted farming communities in districts officially declared as drought-prone by the government. Farmland in these areas had become fully chemicalised from overuse of synthetic inputs, and the program set out to return farming to nature.
Training was delivered through workshops, seminars and sustainable agriculture publications, with schedules adapted to local social preferences. Expert guidance came from the Gandhigram Rural Institute (GRI) and technical support from Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) — 2 institutional partners backing 4 training modules.
Why this work matters
Farmland described as fully chemicalised from overuse of synthetic inputs was degrading just as severe drought gripped Tamil Nadu — leaving soil with little natural fertility to fall back on.
Hands-on training and demonstrations in bio-fertilizer application, soil rejuvenation and natural nutrient enhancement — plus forums comparing organic and conventional systems — to rejuvenate degraded soil and cut chemical dependency.
A one-off workshop leaves farming communities with nothing to refer back to once the trainers move on — and sessions that ignore local rhythms struggle to draw farmers in at all.
Coodu Trust developed and released sustainable agriculture publications as lasting reference materials, adapted training schedules to local social preferences, and drew on GRI expert guidance and KVK technical support.
