A Coodu Trust initiative that trained farmers across districts of Tamil Nadu in organic farming, bio-fertilizers, herbal pesticides and vermicomposting — reviving traditional knowledge where chemical agriculture had degraded the land.
The project
Reviving traditional, eco-friendly farming methods to address land degradation and reduce dependency on chemical inputs — ensuring long-term agricultural sustainability through indigenous knowledge systems.
Delivered by Coodu Trust during 2002–2003, the programme reached farmers in districts across Tamil Nadu where land degradation from chemical agriculture was most pronounced. Its core objective: reduce farmers’ dependency on costly and harmful chemical fertilizers and pesticides by equipping them with the knowledge and skills to use natural, on-farm resources effectively.
Training camps and practical workshops covered organic farming, bio-fertilizer production, herbal pesticide preparation and vermicomposting — low-cost techniques built from resources already on the farm. Beyond technique, the programme facilitated a platform for farmers to debate and understand the long-term benefits of organic systems versus conventional chemical-based farming, preserving indigenous knowledge while restoring the natural ecological balance of farmland.
Why this work matters
Farmers were locked into expensive chemical fertilizers and pesticides — inputs that drained household budgets while degrading the very soil their livelihoods depend on.
Practical workshops equipped farmers to produce their own bio-fertilizers, herbal pesticides and vermicompost from on-farm resources — cost-effective alternatives that rebuild soil health.
Many farmers doubted that indigenous, organic methods could match the productivity of conventional chemical-based farming — and traditional knowledge risked being lost.
Knowledge-sharing platforms and farmer-led discussions let participants weigh organic systems against chemical farming for themselves — practical demonstration building the trust that lectures cannot.
