The project
Demonstrating the field performance of commercially important bamboo species using advanced propagation techniques to promote bamboo as a viable and eco-friendly agricultural option for sustainable livelihoods.
This Coodu Trust initiative brought a multi-institute research collaboration to the field: the Institute of Forest Genetics and Tree Breeding (IFGTB, Coimbatore) as research partner, IWST for technical support and KFRI for research collaboration. Together, the demonstration showcased the field performance of 5 commercially important bamboo species raised from both micro-propagated and macro-propagated planting stock.
The demonstration at Vellayanai village, Thanthoni block, Karur district ran through 2009–2010, giving local farmers, rural communities and agricultural practitioners direct exposure to modern bamboo cultivation methods — a technical demonstration phase focused on sustainable forestry.
